Bathroom Tapware FAQs
How to choose bathroom tapware?
When choosing tapware, take into consideration whether they will be mounted directly to the basin, sink or bath, in the wall, or counter top. Their mounting position will have a huge impact in terms of size and style. It is important to consider the height of tapware, as this can affect normal operation of overhead cabinetry.
While it is important to choose tapware based on the ease of use, you would also want them to complement the style of your bathroom. Basins and baths that have curved designs tend to look better with mixers that have rounded spouts and handles.
Also keep in mind that your tapware should carry a W.E.L.S. rating to comply with government regulations. For more information about W.E.L.S. rating you can visit the Australian government website: http://www.waterrating.gov.au/.
Please note – when tapware is installed, all standards and regulations governing sewerage, plumbing, water supply and gas applicable to the location of the particular plumbing installation must be observed. This includes the Australian Standards (AS/NZ 3500.1-2003, Clause 3.3.4) which specify that water pressure must be limited to 500kpa on any new home, extension or renovation. The recommended continuous operating pressure for tapware is between 150-500kpa (maximum static pressure must not exceed 500kpa).
Does black tapware last?
Yes, many of our black tapware options come with up to 15 years warranty. If the manufacturers are that confident, then we’re happy to back them too and say that black tapware lasts.
The durability in black tapware and other bathroom accessories comes from the fact that they’re often electroplated for a strong, yet rugged finish. This also means that the matte finish found on black tapware is much easier to clean and doesn’t highlight fingerprints or watermarks the same way that metallic tapware can.
To ensure your black tapware lasts even longer, always avoid using chemical cleaning products.
What is the best material for bathroom taps?
The best material for bathroom taps will often come down to personal preference. In saying that however, the majority of bathroom taps we stock at Bathroomware House are solid brass with a chrome finish.
Our solid brass bathroom taps are a premium option that has been proven to stand the test of time when compared with stainless steel or even cheap plastics that we’ve seen used. Brass bathroom taps are unlikely to leak or corrode over time and the chrome finish applied to all of our designs add that extra sparkle when cleaned just right
Our recommendation is not to skimp on quality when it comes to choosing the best material for your bathroom taps. A high-quality brass bathroom tap can add a touch of luxury to any bathroom.

What kind of bathroom taps do we sell?
We sell a comprehensive range of bathroom taps in a range of styles and colours.
Spend some time browsing our full range of bathroom taps on the page above and consider the following tips on what each kind of tap is best suited to each job.
- Basin Tapware
Basin taps can include mixer taps and pillar taps. Mixers are becoming increasingly popular and are available in a wide range of brands and styles. They come with temperature and flow adjustable cartridges and allow maximum water flow and temperature to be set for single lever mixers. You can also regulate water usage and reduce wastage. It is important to pair your basin mixer with your basin – above counter basins may require “high-rise” basin mixers to clear the lip of the bowl.
- Shower Tapware
You can choose from shower tapware that is both stylish and functional. Available in mixer or tap set configurations, you can choose between different designs, from traditional through to modern styles. Ceramic disc units are a popular option as they don’t require any maintenance. You can consider Phoenix tapware which has a great warranty and a life expectancy of over 15 years.
- Bath Tapware
If you are renovating your bathroom then the finishing touch will come from beautiful bath tapware. While there is a complete range of bath tapware available, the Minimalist range is much in demand for its chic and sleek design. Boasting an Italian inspiration, the Minimalist range features ceramic cartridge technology for reliability and performance.
- Kitchen & Laundry Tapware
Most kitchen and laundry tapware is designed to be positioned on the sink or benchtop. However, the situation may arise where the tapware needs to come out of a wall or splashback. In this case, wall stops (hot and cold taps) can be used with a spout.
If a double sink is in place, a swivel spout is normally used to swing from one sink to the other. Keep in mind a spout should not get in the way when washing dishes or handwashing clothes. Pull-out mixer spouts are also an option. They give added reach when cleaning dirty pots & pans, which can sometimes be awkward with a fixed spout
Are bath taps bigger than basin taps?
If you’ve recently bought a bath and have wondered whether you can attach sink taps to the bath or if you need specialised taps, then there are a few things you need to consider.
Bath taps and basin taps usually have the same size handle, in fact, often exactly the same handle to match, however bath taps don’t have a WELS rating, and tend not to have restricted flow, where basin taps do. This is because the bath is regarded as the vessel with a known capacity (you don’t usually put water in without a plug) where, with a basin, it’s important to know flow rate as they are frequently used without a plug e.g. for handwashing etc.
Keep in mind that bath and basin taps also have different size threads. Basin threads at ½ bsp and bath are often ¾ bsp so the tap connectors may need to be changed if you’re making a switch.
